How JuLi collects, uses, and protects information — for parents and children

1. Who this policy covers
This Privacy Policy explains how JuLi ("JuLi," "we," "us") collects, uses, shares, and protects information — both when a parent creates an account and sets it up for their child, and when a child uses JuLi through that account. JuLi is built for children aged 8–12, and is always used under a parent's account and supervision.
JuLi is created and operated by Rethish Varghese, based in India — a father who built JuLi after facing the same challenge many parents do: finding the right words to explain something to a child, in language they can actually understand. The offering is currently for families in India, as data is stored in the Indian region.
2. A note on children's data
JuLi treats data belonging to a child with the highest level of care. Under India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 ("DPDP Act"), anyone under 18 is considered a child, and processing a child's personal data requires verifiable consent from a parent or lawful guardian. The sections below describe how JuLi meets that standard.
Children never create their own account. A parent creates the family account and a dummy profile for the child.
A child accesses JuLi using a PIN or a shareable link set up by their parent — JuLi does not collect a child's email address, phone number, or other direct contact details.
JuLi does not run behavioural advertising, ad tracking, or targeted marketing directed at children, and does not sell children's personal data to anyone, under any circumstances.
Certain sensitive subject areas are permanently excluded from what JuLi will discuss with a child, by design, regardless of how a question is phrased.
A parent can review, export, or delete their child's data at any time through the parent portal, or by contacting us directly.
3. Information we collect
3.1 Information from parents
Name and email address, provided at sign-up
Password (stored in encrypted/hashed form — JuLi never stores a readable copy of your password)
State and city, if provided, used to make your child's daily news content locally relevant
Any communications you send us, such as support requests
3.2 Information about a child, provided by their parent
The child's first name (in fact, a nickname) the parent chooses to enter
An approximate age or age band, used to calibrate JuLi's responses
A PIN or shareable link, generated by JuLi, used only for the child to access their profile
3.3 Content generated through use of JuLi
The questions a child asks JuLi, and JuLi's responses to them
Topic and category information automatically associated with each question (for example, "Earth & Space" or "Emotions & Feelings"), used to build the parent-facing summary of what a child has been curious about
Where a question triggers one of JuLi's built-in safety rules, a record of that event and the notification sent to the parent
Any topic a parent brings to JuLi themselves, for example when asking for help explaining something to their child
3.4 Information collected automatically
Basic technical and usage data needed to operate and secure the service, such as device type, approximate access times, and error logs.
4. How we use this information
To generate and deliver JuLi's responses to a child's questions, calibrated to their age
To apply JuLi's safety rules before any AI-generated response is shown to a child, and to notify a parent when a safety rule is triggered
To build the parent-facing summary of a child's questions and topics of curiosity
To help a parent find age-appropriate language when they bring a topic to JuLi themselves
To generate the daily news content shown to a child, localized using the state a parent has provided
To maintain, secure, and improve the service, including diagnosing technical issues
To communicate with a parent about their account, including safety notifications, which are never optional or able to be disabled
To meet legal, regulatory, and safety obligations
5. Who we share information with
JuLi uses a small number of third-party service providers ("sub-processors") to operate the service. We do not sell personal data to anyone, and we do not share a child's data with data brokers or advertisers.
Anthropic (or similar LLM vendors) — processes a child's question (and relevant conversation context) to generate JuLi's response, and to classify whether a question needs special safety handling.
Tavily — used to retrieve current, real-world information for certain answers and for JuLi's daily news feature, using the topic of the query, not a child's identity.
SendGrid — delivers account and safety-notification emails to parents.
Google Cloud Platform — hosts JuLi's infrastructure and stores JuLi's data, primarily in India (asia-south1 region).
6. Where and how long we store information
JuLi's primary infrastructure and databases are hosted in India. Account and content data is retained for as long as a parent's account remains active, so that JuLi can continue to provide a consistent experience for the family.
7. Security
JuLi uses industry-standard safeguards to protect information, including encrypted connections, encrypted storage of credentials, and access controls limiting who at JuLi can view account or child data. No system can guarantee perfect security, and we encourage parents to use a strong, unique password.
8. A parent's rights
As the account holder, a parent may at any time:
Access the personal data JuLi holds about their account and their child
Correct inaccurate information
Delete their child's profile and associated data, or their entire account
Withdraw consent for their child's data to be processed, which will end JuLi's ability to provide the service to that child
Ask questions or raise concerns about how their data is handled
To exercise any of these rights, contact us using the details in Section 11.
9. Grievance officer
In accordance with Indian law, JuLi has designated a grievance officer to address complaints regarding this policy. You may reach out to guardian_angel@juliapp.in.
10. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. If we make a material change to how we handle a child's data, we will notify parents directly, not just by posting an update on this page.
